Hagia Sophia has separate entrances for sightseeing and prayer. Tourists visiting the upper gallery use the ticketed visitor entrance on the Topkapi Palace side, near the Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III. Worshippers use the main mosque entrance facing Hagia Sophia Square to access the ground-floor prayer area.
The separate entry system has been in place since January 15, 2024. It allows cultural visits to take place without interfering with religious activities inside the mosque.

Where Is the Hagia Sophia Tourist Entrance?
The tourist entrance is on the side of Hagia Sophia facing Topkapi Palace, near the Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III and the Imperial Gate of Topkapi Palace, known as Bab-i Humayun.
Visitors approaching from Sultanahmet Square can find the entrance by following these directions:
- Walk towards Hagia Sophia from Sultanahmet Square.
- Continue around the building in the direction of Topkapi Palace.
- Look for the Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III, opposite the Topkapi Palace Imperial Gate.
- Follow the signs for the ticketed visitor entrance and security checkpoint.
The tourist ticket office is also located in this area. Because restoration work can affect the entrance arrangement, follow the current visitor signs and any instructions provided with your ticket.
Important: Use the Correct Entrance
The main mosque entrance facing Sultanahmet Square is not the entrance for ticketed upper-gallery visits. If you are visiting Hagia Sophia for sightseeing, continue towards the Topkapi Palace side.
If you are traveling from another part of Istanbul, see our How to Get to Hagia Sophia guide for tram, metro and walking directions.
Can Tourists Enter Through the Prayer Entrance?
The prayer entrance is for people entering Hagia Sophia to worship, not for sightseeing. The ground-floor prayer hall remains an active religious space and is not included in the standard tourist visiting route.
Muslims can enter Hagia Sophia for prayer without purchasing a sightseeing ticket, including Muslim visitors from other countries. Worshippers must follow the mosque's prayer schedules and entry procedures.
However, free entry for prayer does not provide access to the upper visitor gallery. Anyone wishing to explore the designated cultural visiting area must use the tourist entrance and meet the applicable ticket requirements.
The distinction is based on the purpose of the visit: religious worship and cultural sightseeing follow separate access procedures.
What Can You Access with Each Entrance?
The ticketed tourist route leads to Hagia Sophia's upper gallery, where visitors view the main interior from above.
The upper-gallery experience includes views of:
- The central dome and supporting arches.
- Surviving Byzantine mosaics along the visitor route.
- Large Ottoman calligraphy panels.
- The main prayer hall from an elevated viewpoint.
- Architectural details from Hagia Sophia's Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
Tourist tickets do not include access to the ground-floor prayer hall. Visitors can observe parts of that area from the gallery but cannot walk through it as part of the sightseeing route.
Restoration work is ongoing at Hagia Sophia. Scaffolding, temporary barriers and conservation work may restrict access to certain sections or affect the visibility of architectural features.
The upper-gallery route also includes historic ramps and stairs that are not suitable for every visitor. People with mobility limitations should confirm the applicable entrance arrangements with site staff before their visit.
How Does Entry Work with a Hagia Sophia Ticket?
Visitors holding a standard mobile entry ticket can use the designated tourist entrance and present their ticket for admission.
- Prepare your ticket: Keep the QR code or mobile ticket accessible before reaching the entrance.
- Find the correct entrance: Follow the signs towards the visitor entrance on the Topkapi Palace side.
- Present your ticket: Show your valid ticket at the designated admission checkpoint.
- Complete security screening: All visitors must pass the required security checks.
- Follow the visitor route: Continue towards the upper gallery using the designated route.
Does Skip-the-Line Include Security?
No. Skip-the-ticket-line admission allows eligible ticket holders to avoid purchasing a ticket at the on-site ticket office. It does not bypass mandatory security screening. Waiting times depend on visitor numbers.
Some guided-tour products have separate meeting points and require visitors to meet a guide before their visit. Follow the instructions for the specific ticket or tour purchased.
Hagia Sophia remains a functioning mosque. Visitors must dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and women must cover their hair. Tourist access can also be restricted during prayers, particularly on Fridays.
